The shipping company’s requirements and fuel characteristics mean that the bunkering system from Kosan Crisplant must have the greatest level of safety and work seamlessly at high pressure and media temperatures below minus 100 degrees Celsius.
The shipping company has three key requirements for the system, which transfers the gas from a tank wagon on the quay to the ferry’s fuel tank: Bunkering must be performed IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES while the ferry is in port. The system must be MOVABLE if routes are transferred to other ports. The system must satisfy all regulatory requirements and have the HIGHEST level of safety.
The high speed bunkering system was developed as a collaboration between the Samsoe Ferries, Q8 Denmark, Kosan Crisplant and MovingEnergy. Betech is collaborating with Kosan Crisplant on the critical seals to manage the volatile LNG gas. The “Advanced Flange gasket” is a further development of more conventional seal types and provides a significantly higher degree of gas sealing at a given torque. The gas gasket is particularly suitable for systems with pressure up to 400 bar and temperatures from -200 to +1,000 degrees Celsius.
“Princess Isabella” on the Hou-Saelvig route is the first Danish domestic ferry to sail on liquefied natural gas, LNG. Liquefied Natural Gas consists of 99 percent liquid natural gas and 1 percent diesel oil.
The ferry is equipped with a dual fuel engine, which makes it possible to sail on both diesel and LNG. When shifting to LNG, the ship’s C02 emissions are reduced by up to 25 percent and soot emissions are completely eliminated.
Behind the green news is also the story about a completely new and patented bunkering technique. Betech’s contribution to this unique development project is a special flange gasket that provides better gas sealing than more usual seal types and ensures the required seal quality.
There is nothing like Kosan Crisplant’s LNG system in Hou anywhere else. An advanced cryogen pump and vacuum-insulated pipes are part of the secret behind the super-fast patented gas transport.
"'Advanced Flange Gasket' is a further development of the familiar cam-profile and SWG-seal. The gas provides an unusually high level of gas sealing and can be the right choice for demanding applications with pressure up to 400 bar and extreme media temperatures from -200 to +1,000 degrees Celsius."
