Gaskets for Scrubber Applications

Crucial to Avoid Unexpected Breakdowns

Global power industry makes huge efforts to reduce emissions from large diesel engines. This is necessary to achieve the desired environmental improvements. As specialist in gaskets and sealing solutions, Betech contribute to this important mission.

Several technologies are competing to be the preferred solution. Scrubbers seem to have become the preferred de facto technology. Right now, there is a strong demand for scrubbers in new build and especially for retrofit. Scrubbers are being installed land based – e.g. in power plants – and offshore in ships and ferries.

Need for reduction of emissions is the main driver. Removal of particulates and other pollutants from the outlet gas are important advantages, too.

The wet scrubber, washing the flue gas with water, is the most applied technology. Other pollution reducing methods embraced by the scrubber terminology are catalytic oxidation, integrated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and injection of alkaline substances.

Whatever the scrubber principle, several factors make the choice of gaskets to critical decisions. Pay particular attention to these key success factors:

Safety risk

Leakage of exhaust gas in confined machine rooms is a life threatening safety risk! Even if a system testes leak-proof when installed, leakages may arise after a few months of operation. Vast vibrations and extreme conditions worsen the risk for leakages. Gasket material, design and fitting is even more important in such situations. Gasket failure is often seen in scrubber applications due to below reasons.

Gasket Design and Material

Application environment is challenging, often with high risk of galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion. As the flue gas can be very warm, selection of material as well as gasket design decisions are crucial. We repeatedly see gaskets installed without necessary advice on materials and design. The result may be a failure within few months. Some corrosion issues in scrubbers are very aggressive and causes considerable costs.

Reliable Quality

The scrubber system is, without question, a critical application. A majority of scrubbers are maritime installations and with difficult access for maintenance. Using insufficient materials or gaskets of inappropriate quality, unexpected downtime will come about – and unplanned breakdowns are very expensive. Thus, it is of outmost importance to select a reliable quality of gasket material.

Flange Design

Scrubbers are most often huge, cramped installations in vessels. Large ducts and extensive flanges make it a critical application, sensitive to the right gasket solution. Betech have the required experience to advice on such flange systems and all aspects of design - including flange surfaces, correct installation, bolt tightening etc. For more than 10 years, Betech have supplied sealing solutions for scrubber applications. We supply you with correct type, design and quality of gaskets to ensure a safe and reliable operation.

Technical inquiry or clarification?

From the above follows that correct quality of gasket and service life of the entire sealing system (flanges, surfaces, bolts and gasket) are key considerations when designing and maintaining scrubber systems.

Below, you find examples of suitable types of gaskets for several scrubber applications.
